Whitlow Named Good Neighbor Award Recipient

RVAR has honored Janie Whitlow, of The Real Estate Group, with the 2020 RVAR Good Neighbor Award for her work with the Community Christmas Store of the Roanoke Valley.

Whitlow is one of the founders of the Community Christmas Store and has served many roles with the organization over the years. Her hard work and dedication have been instrumental in the growth of the CCS. After starting in the town of Salem, Whitlow has overseen the growth of the CCS to a regional powerhouse serving the needs of the less fortunate.

Along with the award the RVAR donated $1,000.00 to the Community Christmas Store of the Roanoke Valley in Whitlow’s honor.

Whitlow is a former RVAR President.

The RVAR Good Neighbor Award recognizes a local REALTOR® who gives of his or her time to an organization that improves the quality of life in the Greater Roanoke Valley.

 
Kingery Named REALTOR® of the Year

 RVAR has honored Billy Kingery, of Mountain to Lake Realty, with the 2020 REALTOR® of the Year award.

Kingery has been a REALTOR® since 1990, serving in various volunteer capacities for RVAR including service on RVAR's Board of Directors and longtime service on RVAR’s Governmental Affairs Committee. He is well known for his many civic and community service activities, including currently serving on Carilion Hospital’s Board of Directors.

The REALTOR® of the Year award is RVAR's highest honor, recognizing a local REALTOR® who demonstrates outstanding REALTOR® spirit, business accomplishments and community involvement.     

 
Code of Ethics Change: Effective November 13th

NAR's Board of Directors, at its November 13th meeting, voted to strengthen REALTORS®' commitment to upholding fair housing ideals, approving recommendations from NAR's Professional Standards Committee that extend the application of April 10 of the Code of Ethics to discriminatory speech and conduct outside of members' real estate practice.

The Board approved a new Standard of Practice 10-5: "REALTORS® must not use harassing speech, hate speech, epithets or slurs based on race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status, national origin, sexual orientation or gender identity."

The Board also approved a change to professional standards policy, expanding the Code of Ethics' applicability to all of a REALTOR®'s activities. The Board made these changes effective as of November 13th, though the changes cannot be applied to speech or conduct that occured before the effective date.
